Abstract

I initiated and co-curated drawing? in 2015/6. With a grant of £45K from ACE, I established and chaired a steering group of senior and Professorial representatives from three of our regional universities (Newcastle, Teesside and UNN). In collaboration with galleries, archives and other organizations across the NE, I developed a programme of activities, exhibitions and events celebrating the role and importance of drawing in A&D, architecture, education, science & engineering. drawing? opened with a show and public lecture by Sir Antony Gormley and was bookended by an exhibition and accompanying artist’s book (published by AEN) of the drawings of Prof. Eric Bainbridge from UoS. The programme was interdisciplinary with artists from France, Israel, Scandinavia, India, the US and the UK and engaged a number of BAME groups in the NE.

Item Type: Show/Exhibition
Additional Information: As part of my general research into teaching pedagogies, I initiated and successfully developed a major project called drawing? With a grant of £45K from ACE, I established and chaired a steering group consisting of representatives from four of our regional universities (Prof Keith McIntyre, Head of School, UNN; Richard Talbot, Head of Research, Newcastle University; Alix Collingwood and Prof. Gerda Roper, Dean, from Teesside University/mima). In collaboration with galleries, archives and other organizations across the North-East, we pooled our combined resources and expertise - in curating, drawing, academic research and engagement - to create a stimulating and accessible programme of activities that otherwise could not have been achieved; a programme of related exhibitions and events throughout the NE from June 2015 – January 2016 which celebrated the role and importance of drawing – not only in the arts, but also in science & engineering. drawing? highlighted the power of drawing - presenting contemporary drawing as a significant element in artistic expression and underlining its fundamental role in education. It explored the role drawing plays in all our lives: in art, architecture, design, illustration, education, science & engineering. drawing? opened with an exhibition of new drawings and a public lecture about the role of drawing by Sir Antony Gormley presented alongside an exhibition of artists’ and engineering drawings from the archive of Tyne and Wear Museums and was bookended with an exploration of the relationship between drawing and sculpture (with an accompanying artist’s book published by AEN) of the drawings of Prof. Eric Bainbridge from The University of Sunderland. The programme was interdisciplinary and international; it included performance art, engineering drawings, architect’s sketches and calligraphy, with artists showing from France, Israel, Scandinavia, India, the US and the UK. Drawing? engaged with a range of communities in the NE from Sangini (a group of Asian women based in South Shields and Sunderland) to Visual Arts in Rural Communities (VARC). In total I raised £72K external funding for this project from ACE, Newcastle University, UNN, mima/Teesside University, HLF and The Customs House. This project has encouraged my academic colleagues at the University of Sunderland to further embed drawing within the curriculum. I have given a number of faculty talks about the show and its aims; I have run a series of workshops across the faculty around drawing and have helped shape the delivery of the A&D curriculum at the University to include specific drawing weeks in Fine Art and Design.
