Live-streamed lesson observations as part of the Assessment-Only route to QTS

Hidson, Elizabeth and Elliott, Ian (2022) Live-streamed lesson observations as part of the Assessment-Only route to QTS. In: Digital Learning and Teaching Conference, 28 June 2022, Sunderland, UK. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)

Abstract

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is usually gained at the end of a course in initial teacher education in the UK. It can be gained by overseas teachers if they meet the eligibility criteria. The assessment-only route to QTS for teachers in overseas British curriculum schools is characterised by interviews, lesson observations and assessment of an evidence portfolio that together demonstrate the extent to which a candidate’s practice meets the UK Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2011).
In 2020, national and international travel for assessors to visit teachers in British schools overseas to carry out AOR-QTS assessments was halted because of Covid-19. Against this context, and where permissible, assessments are currently undertaken using video-enhanced lesson observation of recorded and live-streamed lessons along with an assessment of a digital portfolio of evidence.
This presentation will focus on the practicalities of live-streaming lessons through MS Teams, using recent examples of live-streamed lesson observations.
