Item Type: Performance

Abstract

New work entitled "Kaleidoscope" commissioned by the Late Music Festival in York, was written for the Delta Saxophone quartet. It originates from the images created by a kaleidoscope- how the colours slowly grow from each other to make patterns, and also how the origin of the word depicts the essence of the object itself.

The three words: "Kalos" meaning beautiful beauty, "eidos" that which is seen or suggesting form, shape and finally "skopeo" suggesting to look or examine; utilised almost as lenses in which to listen/write through, translating colour into sound. The "split chords" which recur throughout the piece resonated and "grew" into fruition almost like dropping ink into a glass of water- the dispersion of colour. It was premiered on Sunday 6th September in York.
