Abstract

Redacted Territories is a series of 16 images created by appropriating screenshots from the Internet of contemporary street scenes in Northern Ireland. The screenshots are systematically redacted in order to remove what may be deemed as ‘sensitive’ and/or ‘offensive’ by opposing communities and, moreover, the governing powers. The work aims to draw attention to the complexities the authorities face in attempting to reconcile emotive concerns regarding cultural identity
- particularly relevant when considering Belfast City Council’s controversial ‘Flying of the Union Flag Policy’
