Abstract
What challenges do queer people face across the globe and what does homo/bi/transphobia look like in today’s world? What are the factors that stand in the way of queer freedom? This book takes a global snapshot of queer human rights in every region of the world, how they impact and are felt by queer people and their communities. Through charting illuminating case studies of queer lives, and through in-depth interviews with activists, businesses, UN agencies and INGOs/NGOs, this book gets to the heart of what is happening to queer people worldwide.
It will do this through mapping a current snapshot of the ever-changing landscape of the human rights issues and homo/bi/transphobia faced by queer people and their communities in different regions of the map, such as Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa, examining each of these global regions through a targeted and in-depth country analyses. It will also examine the overlooked impact of this on the ‘pink diaspora’ of global refugees, the ignored effects of climate change on queer people, and the impact of global bodies on queer rights, such as the United Nations and INGOs.
Through introducing the reader to key ideas from queer theory, stigma theory, and the sociology of sexuality in an accessible way, this book will create a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of queer people today, including their fights, foes, gains, losses, and wins, in a transitional world where LGBTQI+ politics and rights have become a battleground for equality.
