Abstract

This panel discussion brings together the chairs of nine Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) staff networks at the University of Sunderland to explore the crucial role these networks play in fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace. Staff networks provide safe spaces for employees to connect, share experiences, and advocate for positive change within the institution.
The panel will engage in an open and candid discussion about the tangible benefits of being part of these networks. Topics will include the role of peer support in enhancing staff well-being, the impact of networks in influencing university policies, and how they contribute to personal and professional development. Attendees will gain insights into how these networks empower staff from diverse backgrounds, foster allyship, and help create a more inclusive university culture.
Chairs will share success stories, challenges faced, and strategies for ensuring that networks remain active, accessible, and impactful. The discussion will also highlight the importance of senior leadership engagement and institutional commitment in supporting these groups.
This session is valuable for all staff interested in learning more about the power of networks, whether as potential members, allies, or advocates. By the end of the panel, attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how staff networks contribute to both individual and institutional growth, reinforcing the University of Sunderland’s commitment to EDI.
