Job title:
Lecturer in Professional Practice
Biography:
I have over a decade of experience within research and higher education and have worked across a wide range of disciplines and academic departments. I specialise in questions of knowledge, culture, and co-creation. My scholarship explores how expertise is both influenced by and/or accepted, rejected, or adapted by non-specialists to create the information and practices that surround us on a daily basis. My own academic journey began by asking these questions in arts and humanities contexts, particularly in relation to health and education of the past, before opening out my research and listening to voices in many other disciplines including business and management, law, and social work. I have taught across many subjects, included those listed above, and retain a real interest in healthcare and the third sector where both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are driven by a desire to create caring cultures within society! I am also interested in women's experience of learned and professional cultures over time and how their voices can be heard in new and emerging contexts. Public and business engagement are core features of my scholarship and I welcome contact from organisations and professionals who might be interested in collaborations or developing connections with myself, our colleagues, and students.
Whilst undertaking my early research I further established myself as a practitioner the field of student engagement through a variety of professional roles. I am passionate about forms of student engagement both inside and beyond the classroom, particularly through initiatives that position students as partners and co-creators of their learning experience. My most recent work in this area was through the leadership of a Santander Changemakers project which saw students assessing the learning development and study skills offer here at the University of Sunderland and creating new materials to support their peers.
I publish within my specialist fields and peer review for a variety of publishers and internationally-recognised journals. I also have experience supervising students at both Masters and PhD levels in the fields of business, humanities, and higher education and welcome discussions about supervision.
