James Hutchinson was born in 1968 in London. He graduated in Painting from Chelsea College of Art and Design (1990) and in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art (1998). He is currently MA Visual Practice Programme Leader at the University of Sunderland.
Hutchinson's practice has expanded to embrace a wide variety of media. He runs a studio in Sunderland , has ongoing: painting, animation, 3d computer modeling, print, and photographic projects, has worked with architects on regeneration projects for Ouseburn (Newcastle) and Roker and Seaham (Sunderland). Hutchinson is currently and has organised the Sunderland Pavilion of the Wrong Bienale over the last 6 years and is a longstanding member of Ars Mathematica .

Hutchinson’s work has been exhibited in Strasbourg, The NGCA Sunderland, 6th Berlin Leise park Ausstellung, Collège des Bernardins; Paris, Timisora; Romania and Shoreditch Arts Club London.
