Abstract
Freedom of Information (FOI) is a vital tool in the armoury of any investigative journalist - and fundamental to the media’s role as watchdog for the public interest. This chapter offers a critical comparative analysis of FOI laws in countries across the globe where the legislation exists. The chapter outlines the achievements and limitations of FOI in those countries, in terms of increasing accountability, tackling corruption, and ensuring efficient governance. Utilising an in-depth case study, this chapter explores its application in a UK context, evaluating quantitative data that indicates trends toward declining effectiveness. It also considers whether legislation should be updated and extended, and what role investigative journalism can play in making that case.
