Abstract
Venue: Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland (Collection Space) and Newcastle Hospital sites
NHS Darkroom: Come As You Really Are is the 2025 iteration of NHS Darkroom, an ongoing participatory photography research project led by Johannah Churchill in partnership with Newcastle Hospitals Charity and the University of Sunderland. For this iteration, NHS staff from Newcastle Hospitals were invited to photograph their own hobbies, crafts and collections, alongside ithers take in B&W across the hospital - developing and printing images in the darkrooms at the University of Sunderland's Northern Centre of Photography. The resulting work was displayed across the NGCA Collection Space and Newcastle Hospital sites. The project title was inspired by the NGCA's concurrent main gallery exhibition Come As You Really Are. Portraits of participants were made by Churchill alongside participant-made photographs developed and printed in the darkroom.
