Unearthed: Soil Restoration in Northumberland (We Feed the UK) Unearthed and Constellations

Churchill, Johannah (2024) Unearthed: Soil Restoration in Northumberland (We Feed the UK) Unearthed and Constellations. .

Item Type: Show/Exhibition

Abstract

A solo exhibition combining two photographic series, Down to Earth and Constellations, made at West Wharmley Farm, Northumberland, in collaboration with regenerative farmer Stuart Johnson. Down to Earth documents farming and family life and the ongoing care for worlds both above and below ground. Constellations presents scanographs and microscopic images of soil specimens - worms, weeds and organic matter - that form an inverted sky beneath our feet. The exhibition includes a new poem, The Soil Speaks, by Kate Fox, commissioned alongside the photographic work. Churchill was commissioned by We Feed The UK, a national storytelling campaign grown by the Gaia Foundation in partnership with the North East Photography Network. The exhibition launched on 9 November 2024 with live poetry from Kate Fox, and included a panel discussion on 7 December 2024 featuring Nature Friendly Farming Network, Nature North, and farmers Stuart Johnson, Sue Seymour and James Robinson, alongside the first northern screening of Common Ground, a film about regenerative agriculture narrated by Jason Momoa.
