Abstract

Future Care is a portrait series dedicated to healthcare workers past, present and future, launched to mark the fifth anniversary of the first Covid-19 lockdown. The series brings together Churchill's iconic image Melanie, March 2020 with two new portraits of University of Sunderland healthcare students, Abeni Adeyemi (medicine) and Aaron Harlow-Stephenson (paramedic science). The work was unveiled at the John Dawson Sciences Complex on 20 March 2025 and was made possible through the support of honorary graduate Mike Davies CBE. A subsequent iteration, exhibited at Murray Library in December 2025, extended the series through the Future Care Scholarship, which awarded two photography students a £1,000 commission to contribute their own portraits to the collection.
