Abstract
This keynote explored gender inequality in the culinary industry through the lived experiences of female chefs in Malaysia. Drawing on qualitative narrative research, the presentation examined how gender schema theory and the social division of labour shape women's career pathways and professional experiences within a male-dominated occupation. It highlighted the structural and socio-cultural barriers encountered by female chefs, alongside the strategies they employ to navigate career progression and adapt to workplace challenges. The presentation also considered the role of media in reinforcing gendered representations of chefs and reflected on the implications for creating more inclusive and equitable professional environments.
