Abstract

For The first iteration of Hands On: Pedagogy I presented a work from 2020 Cyber cage and a Painting from 2025 from my RedAI series. The Exhibition Opened Tuesday 7 April 10 till 5 and ran until Tues 26 May 2026 we also held :

Please join us for the opening of our second Transitions Fine Art showcase at the Maker Meanwhile Gallery, Sunderland. Hands On Pedagogy, Practice, Research celebrates University of Sunderland’s bold and inspirational approach to contemporary Fine Art education, creative practice and practice research. The exhibition showcases our internationally recognised teaching, artistic and creative practice research community, including our academics, creative technicians and practice-based PhD community. For this special opening event, we will host a panel discussion with members of our Fine Art academic team to explore the value of a Fine Art education today and highlight the interrelationships between Arts based pedagogy, creative practice and practice research.

Join us at 5.30pm on Tuesday 28 April 2026 for the opening of our second Fine Art pop up exhibition at the Maker Meanwhile Gallery, Sunderland.

Hands On: Pedagogy, Practice, Research celebrates University of Sunderland’s bold approach to world leading contemporary Fine Art education and cultivating the connections between pedagogy, art making and creative practice research. The exhibition showcases our internationally recognised teaching, artistic and creative practice research community, including our academics, creative technicians and practice-based PhD community.

Exhibiting artists are; Dr Fiona Larkin, Natalie Gale, Hannah Gawn, Speaking in Tongues, Lothar Goetz, James Hutchinson, Ralf Broeg, Graham Mitchinson, Craig Knowles and James Stephen Wright.

Hands On: Pedagogy, Practice, Research was curated by Dr Suzy O’Hara and produced by the Fine Art academic, technical and PhD team.

Artists in Conversation and Speaking in Tongues “hands on” workshop. For this special opening event, we will host a series of short artist presentations that
highlight the interrelationships between the experience of teaching arts-based pedagogy, art making and creative practice research. This will be followed by a mini “hands on” creative workshop by Speaking in Tongues researchers Dr Fiona Larkin, Natalie Gale, Hannah Gawn.
