Abstract
A Sign in Space is an opera based on Italo Calvino's short story of the same name. The work examines the interrelationship and interdependence of music and words by conflating sacred and secular imagery (visual, auditory and linguistic). This 1-hour work (scored for solo violin, harp, organ, big band, mixed voices and surround sound) was supported by a linked research project entitled 'Sounding the Sacred' which involved 100 participants exploring the acoustical and cultural resonances of Durham Cathedral.
A Sign in Space was commissioned by The Forge and Durham Cathedral with £60,000 funding from Youth Music and Durham County Council.
