Abstract
the 13th IGS international glass symposium was held in Novy Bor, Czech Republic in 2018. Invited artists are paired with a local factory, using its specialist artisanal and modern manufacturing techniques to produce new artwork for a permanent collection at the Decorative Arts Museum in Prague and a travelling exhibition. The artwork was inspired by the histories of form, colour, texture and pattern that were visible in the glass. Working with an eclectic mix of new and outdated designs found in the Crystalex stock room, I endeavoured to produce artworks that brought the oldest and newest aspects of their production together. Working with the glass painters, who were adept at using both traditional and contemporary techniques, crystallising moment for me was to spray colour their vessels with the oldest ruby colour fading into the newest neon pink. A digitally produced stencil was then used to create precise silhouette imagery in gold lustre. From this moment I could see the logic of my relationship as an artist coming into a factory setting, which is to respond and interpret their collection of objects and bring the past and present together through my experience.
