Abstract
This entry provides an outline definition of podcasting, as a means of distribution and as a medium. In its most basic sense podcasting describes the means by which media files can be distributed easily across the Internet to subscribing consumers, usually as part of an ongoing series. The term is a portmanteau word, combining the words “iPod” and “broadcast” to differentiate the process from traditional definitions of live linear broadcasting. While the term describes the distribution framework, it has now also become the term used to describe a form of production.
