Abstract

During an international recruitment event Mark and I discussed the concept of Outduction to enhance the student experience. We have worked to improve induction with an enhanced induction experience for BSc (Hons) Nursing (Top Up) students but had not necessarily considered what happens at the end of studies, so the discussion of an Outduction was a welcome addition.

By the end of the session attendees will be able to understand how an Outduction could work for their own courses and the benefits this could lead to. We recognise the importance of a good start to a higher educational journey, but don’t always consider the benefit of a robust Outduction to support the structured offboarding of students from university.

We created an Outduction event with over 70 students in attendance, with presentations and support from staff across university services and a member of the academic team to discuss postgraduate study. By using an initial conference with rapid presentation styles at the beginning, we progressed to a stall-based event where students were able to ask questions to colleagues to help inform choices and decision-making. By empowering our students to have the information they need we have looked to support their educational futures.

The use of an Outduction may help to address the questions which are often asked, as well as those which are not, to help support students and reduce both stress and anxiety in what can be a transitionary period in a student’s life.
