Abstract
Sharing economy is an evolving multidimensional concept shaped by economic, technological and socio-cultural forces - complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic. This chapter draws on the results of an empirical study to critically evaluate the strategic implications, challenges and opportunities of adopting a sharing economy-based framework for developing remote rural communities in Indonesia into international tourism destinations. Thematic analysis of the empirical data reveals significant challenges and opportunities facing tourism policymakers and practitioners - covering six critical areas for enhancement: value of stakeholder-shareholder cooperation, compactness of women groups, efficiency of the ‘ibu-ibu’ in public kitchens, involvement of tourists in local societies, training of local guides; and strategic role of the Indonesia Government.
