Abstract
Research methods is common across many degree programmes, giving students the opportunity to engage with and explore the creation of ‘new knowledge’ through research. Within our current BSc Nursing Top-up programme, we have begun the process of decolonising our approach to the delivery of research methods, within a research proposal module. This has led us towards thinking critically about how we present information, how we engage students, and forcing us to think differently about the approaches taken to research methods. We will take you on our own learning journey through the widening of topic areas beyond general conceptions of methodology, past the normative approaches take to qualitative and quantitative research, and beyond the unethical practices of Zimbardo and Milgram. Our aim during the delivery of our teaching here is to challenge the Western, Euro-Centric, global North, ‘traditional’ approach to the delivery of research methods in education and the approaches that we have taken to broadening discussion within the classroom. As this is an iterative project, we will present the current position of our work to decolonise research, highlight evaluations of the project so far, and future directions for the work to expand both within the module and across the curriculum.
