Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide context and the key learnings and shortcomings from London 2012 Games and its focus on delivering a legacy of community volunteering inspired and supported by the event. In particular, the chapter looks at a specific case study of the London 2012 volunteer programme, its impact on the broader community, and the challenges and strategies required for sustained community support beyond mega-sport events. This discussion is important as it addresses the ongoing need for holistic legacy plans that are developed through the bidding stage, leveraged throughout an event’s lifecycle and do not cease to exist after the event has concluded. It offers valuable insights for fostering sustained community engagement, development of skills and human capital and addressing challenges related to volunteer mobilization and support.
