Abstract

This book showcases a spectacular collection of original material associated with Sunderland's historic 1973 FA Cup run and their famous giant killing victory in the final against the then mighty Leeds United. It features snapshot photos, home-made banners, scarves, rosettes, scrapbooks, memorabilia and all kinds of mementos that were made or collected by the fans and local people who were there. Such items rarely get attention but they are the people's visual history, offering a valuable and distinctive viewpoint that truly captures the emotions and experiences of the time.

The project developed and managed by Amanda Ritson, commissioning lead artist (and Visiting Professor of University of Sunderland) Julian Germain. The book is publshed by research initiative NEPN (Manager A. Ritson) with A Love Supreme.
The project was produced in partnership with Coals to Goals project at Foundation of Light, The Cultural Spring, Back on the Map, Stitch and Bitch Sunderland and over 100 contributors of photographs, memories and memorabilia.
