Abstract
This project is a community-engaged, dance-based initiative designed to address social isolation and promote physical activity among adults aged 50 and over. Funded by the Arts Council as part of the Dance&US.Com (Dance and University of Sunderland and Community) programme, the project offers a series of inclusive, accessible dance sessions that foster connection, creativity, and wellbeing through movement. Delivered in collaboration with local community centres and cultural venues, the sessions will be led by experienced dance artists trained in participatory practice and working with older populations.
With a focus on gentle physical activity, creative expression, and social interaction, the project aims to support emotional and physical health while providing a welcoming space for participants to form new friendships and engage with the arts. Each session will integrate music, storytelling, and improvisational movement, tailored to suit varying levels of mobility and experience. The collaborative structure encourages participants to contribute their ideas, promoting a sense of ownership and agency.
Informed by current research into ageing, wellbeing, and community arts practice, the project also seeks to contribute to broader conversations around active ageing and the role of dance in public health. Outcomes include improved confidence, increased physical activity levels, enhanced mood, and reduced feelings of loneliness. As part of the Dance&US.Com initiative, the project embodies a shared commitment to arts accessibility, lifelong learning, and the co-creation of cultural experiences that are both meaningful and transformative for older adults.
