Abstract
Urban II was a tripartite initiative led by the University of Sunderland, supported by European Union funding, aimed at addressing educational disengagement and socio-economic disadvantage in former coalfield areas. The dance strand sought to build pathways into higher education for young people by using the performing arts as a means of engagement, aspiration-raising, and skill development.
Working closely with local schools and community partners, the performance strand of Urban II focused on teenagers aged 14–18, many of whom had limited exposure to university life or cultural participation. Through a series of artist-led workshops and devised performance projects, participants explored themes relevant to their lives and communities while gaining confidence, communication skills, and a greater understanding of higher education as an accessible and viable option.
By combining creative practice with targeted outreach, Urban II functioned as a catalyst for widening participation and social inclusion. The project demonstrated the potential of arts-based interventions to foster educational ambition and community regeneration in post-industrial regions. Its collaborative model highlights the importance of universities working in partnership with local communities to create meaningful and transformative opportunities for young people.
