Abstract

Clayton’s chapter, in Spanish, on Edward Johnston, the calligraphic pioneer and designer of the London Underground type, introduces the background to Johnston’s calligraphic theory to a Spanish speaking audience. It also documents the few known facts about Johnston’s early life, he was born in Uruguay in 1872. The chapter forms part of the opening section to the first ever survey of Latin American typography and is itself part of a larger research project exploring the legacy of the calligrapher Edward Johnston.
