More Information
Additional Information: This is Bainbridge's seventh solo exhibition (2004) at Galleria Ala, Milan/New York. It contains 15 large-scale sculptures and 'paintings' (wall-works). The space is a leading contemporary art gallery which since its inception in 1979, has worked with some of the most influential artists of the post war period. In the year preceding this exhibition artists shown included Michelangelo Pistoleto, Emilio Vedova, Gunter Forg, Imi Knoebel and Keith Haring. This exhibition was conceived to re-contextualise sculptures of a previous period (1985-95) and foreground how Bainbridge's concerns have proved seminal in relation to other subsequent artistic outputs. This body of work has been widely evidenced to have had a significant impact upon understandings of contemporary sculpture. The works in the exhibition had not previously been shown in Europe. They examine the status of everyday objects through a range of processes that include; remaking, manipulations of scale and the subversion of acts of cognition. The related exhibition: 'Size Matters: Exploring Scale in the Arts Council Collection', (2005, Hayward Gallery Touring Exhibition, ISBN 1 85332 249 0) and the publication 'Heaven and Earth Roundabout' (2001, with essays by Jonathon Meades and Mark Little, ISBN 0 954047 50 8), support the arguments that these concerns have come to the forefront of contemporary art practices.
