Abstract
Using Panos Kokkinias’ recent photographic work as a case study, this paper explores how contemporary Greek photographers have re-conceptualized their country’s landscape as entity, process and image in their imag(in)ing of Greece at a time of crisis. The politicized landscape of the new millennium not only challenges the old Philhellene ideals, western tourism clichés and local camera club picturesque that informed the ‘imagined community’ (Anderson 1983) of the Greek nation in the post-war years and the commodification of the ‘authentic Greek experience’ in the subsequent rebranding of Greece for mass tourism as ‘a masterpiece you can afford’. It also calls into question the very notion of landscape as cultural construct, its poetics and politics.
