Abstract
In this chapter, two academics who grapple with the challenges of ADHD delve into their personal experiences and the often-unspoken struggles of living as neurodivergent individuals in a demanding academic environment. They explore the concept of “masking”—the act of concealing their ADHD traits to fit societal expectations and avoid judgment. Through candid anecdotes and relatable reflections, they aim to shed light on the emotional labour that comes with pretending to be someone they are not. Drawing from their own journeys, they discuss the complexities of balancing academic responsibilities while managing the symptoms of ADHD, such as difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and time management challenges. They share strategies that have helped them navigate these hurdles, offering insights into how they find excitement in their work despite their struggles.
