Abstract
2022 marked the 40th anniversary of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model, a game-based approach (GBA) proposed by David Bunker and Rod Thorpe (A Model for Teaching of Games in Secondary Schools, Bulletin of Physical Education, 1982). TGfU is a learner-centred pedagogy that advances overall game competence via the implementation of modified games to promote enjoyment and continued involvement. Bunker and Thorpe’s six step Curriculum Model encourages pupils participation in the decision-making and problem-solving processes that are presented by a game (Bunker & Thorpe, 1982). This article sought to educate and inform practitioners by presenting a historical background of the development of TGfU and GBAs and detailing the activities of the AIESEP TGfU Special Interest Group (TGfU SIG).
