Abstract
In the dynamic landscape of social endeavour, the voluntary sector emerges as a vital force driven by individuals committed to the greater good. This paper explores the common motivations of benevolence and selflessness among those working in the sector, investigating how their identities intertwine with the sector as a whole. Social Identity Theory serves as a framework to understand the intricate dynamics of self-concept derived from group memberships within the voluntary sector. Despite potential financial trade-offs, individuals in this sector are motivated by a collective desire to make a difference. The study sheds light on the interconnected identities within the sector, emphasising the sector’s role in shaping a collective purpose that transcends individual narratives.
