Abstract
This chapter explores how practitioner-researchers can recognise and respond to ethical research dilemmas, highlighting the importance of moral thinking and reflexive practice. As new areas of knowledge emerge, traditional ethics frameworks may no longer be relevant, emphasising the need for ongoing consideration of changing norms and values. The increasing availability of personal data online raises questions about privacy and informed consent. This chapter examines five key approaches to ethical research: recognising the origins of research governance; using self-reflection to inform practice; managing conflicts of interest as an early-career practitioner-researcher; embedding ethics at every stage; and responding to emerging considerations. By adopting a reflexive approach, practitioner-researchers can foster trust, reliability and responsible knowledge production in their fieldwork. This chapter aims to provide practical guidance for those navigating the complexities of ethical research practice, particularly in fields such as nursing and social work where practitioner-researcher positions blur traditional boundaries between practice and academia.
