Graphite explores the practice of contemporary drawing in the work of ten artists who exhibited at Gallery North in January 2011: Cath Campbell, Peter J. Evans, Richard Forster, Louise Hopkins, Laura Lancaster, Rachel Lancaster, Jane Millican, Michael Mulvihill, Alice Woodhouse and Joe Woodhouse. Introductory essays by Michael Mulvihill, Joe Woodhouse and Cordelia Underhill – on ‘Writing on Drawing’ -are followed by a series of interviews conducted by the editors and by Helen Baker, director of Gallery North, in which the artists discuss their work and their specific ideas about the nature of drawing as a distinctive area of practice.
