Abstract
Grosseteste talked in his treatise De Colore that ‘Colour is light in a diaphanous medium’. He goes on to explain that colour is also dependent on factors affecting the light: the abundance of light, (pauca/multa), the purity of the light (purum/impurum) and the clarity of the light (clara/obscura).
These two works exhibited in this show are inspired by this treatise. They can be viewed together or separately.
Lining the two works up at a relative distance from one another, the grey piece can be used as a filter to view the coloured work. This gives the viewer an understanding of the qualities of light Grosseteste was trying to describe and the effects that this has on the colour in the other work.
The pieces are made up from fused sheets of glass cut and polished to give the desired effect of filter and colour source.
