Abstract

Sport, Media and Discrimination provides critical, inter-disciplinary and international perspectives on how sports media constructs and reinforces discrimination in contemporary societies.

The book argues that the importance of sport within modern culture means sports media has a powerful role to play in circulating, and combatting, potentially harmful ideas. Furthermore, the recent explosion of online and social media-related discrimination makes the understanding and tackling of these problems a matter of social importance and urgency. Including theoretical and empirically-informed contributions from leading researchers from around the world, the book examines four core themes: diversity and the sports media; sports media representations and receptions; social media, sport and discrimination; and Esports and discrimination. Featuring fascinating contemporary cases including amateur footballers, ethnicity and sports media; gender imbalance in Australian sports media; the legal regulation of social media; and the digital representation of Black women footballers in the FIFA videogame, the book offers a clear sense of the key issues and questions in this field, while offering potential solutions and ways forward.

This book is important reading for anybody with an interest in the sociology of sport, sports media and communication, gender studies, ‘race’ and racism, media studies, or the impact of technology on society.
