Abstract
Background: Thyroid cancer is a comparatively uncommon and low-mortality cancer. However, it is predicted that its prevalence will rise by 74% in the UK by 2035. The literature suggests that the psychosocial quality of life of patients can be negatively affected by thyroid cancer, although there is little explanation of the reasons for this. Existing studies are mainly quantitative and do not thoroughly explore the factors that impact people's experiences.
Methods: Twenty-five thyroid cancer patients, within four years of diagnosis, were recruited from the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at the Freeman Hospital, and from the charity Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust. The primary data collection method was semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data was analysed through descriptive phenomenological analysis.
Results: The patient’s psychological health, physical health, relationships, employment, and finances can be impaired by the diagnosis and treatment. Negative factors affect the overall experience lack of compassion from healthcare professionals, as well as physical side effects after surgery and during recovery. Isolation and loneliness can be major difficulties at many stages of treatment, particularly when being treated with radioactive iodine. Anxiety and fear were widespread among participants.
Discussion and conclusion: Experience with thyroid cancer can be very traumatic for thyroid cancer patients. Excellent medical and nursing care as well as supportive services is essential in providing optimal care for these patients. Despite the good prognosis, patients need emotional support and care as well as comprehensive, thyroid-cancer-specific information, referrals to specialist services and a knowledgeable key worker who can assess and address any unmet needs.
