Abstract
Portrait commission for the Telegraph Magazine (23 May 2026). A portrait of Millie Matthews, 99, photographed at her home in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. Millie was 14 years old when a German bomb destroyed the air raid shelter at Wilkinson's Lemonade Factory in North Shields on 3 May 1941, killing 107 civilians. One of the few survivors, she has lived with the trauma of that night for over eighty years. The portrait accompanies a feature by author John Nichol exploring civilian experience, memory, and survival during the Second World War.
