Abstract
‘Enchiridion’ is Brennan’s forthcoming publication through Information As Material.
The publication develops Brennan’s work with the form of the guidebook and guided tour to produce a performance score. The reader/participant may access the book not only as critical travel writing, performance document and artist book, but also as an itinerary with which to make a 3 part journey in Scotland.
The work develops Brennan’s performance walk (manoeuvre) through Battlehill Woods in Huntly, NE Scotland for Deveron Arts’ (http://www.deveron-arts.com/wb/pages/artists/donachie/brennan.php)
The published journey utilises train from Aberdeen to Huntly, through Battle Hill Woods and then returning by train. Along the way, Brennan offers instruction, direction and selected quotations to enable the viewer to way-find whilst critically reflecting upon the construction of place. The pocket-size book is unique as a guide in that it takes into consideration the felling of much of the wood in question and therefore operates both as a memorial to a place now significantly changed and as an active itinerary.
Its main research question is ‘How might a performance score navigate the changing co-ordinates of the built environment’.
Enchiridion is to be published by Information As Material (http://informationasmaterial.com/iam/about/), will be distributed by Cornerhouse and feature in the Whitechapel art Gallery’s ‘London Art Book Fair’ (2011).
The publication is supported by Huntly Development Trust.
The publication will be launched as part of The University of Aberdeen’s international Festival of Walking (27-29 August 2012).
