Abstract

Decolonising the curriculum in higher education is an essential step towards fostering an inclusive learning environment that acknowledges and values diverse perspectives. The traditional curriculum often reflects a Eurocentric viewpoint, marginalising other cultural narratives and contributing to systemic inequities within the educational system.

Attendees of this session will gain insights into the importance of decolonising the curriculum and will be introduced to practical tools and strategies for implementing these changes. The session will highlight the necessity of this work by examining current curricular practices and their limitations. Participants will leave with an understanding of effective methods to decolonise their own teaching practices, including the use of a specially developed practical toolkit. The toolkit includes guidelines for inclusive course design, resources for diversifying reading lists, and strategies for facilitating open and critical discussions in the classroom.

Additionally, the session will propose the formation of a working/action group aimed at continuing this vital work through collaborative efforts, using case studies, podcasts, and real-world examples as a foundation. The proposed collaborative working group will serve as a catalyst for ongoing development and implementation, ensuring that the University remains at the forefront of inclusive educational practices.

Overall, this session aims to inspire and equip attendees with the tools needed to effect meaningful change in their teaching and beyond that is constantly responsive to student needs, help students feel as though they belong in their course and learning highlights invisible knowledge from a global perspective.
