Abstract
The need for decolonial approaches at the University of Sunderland is particularly pressing as the institution seeks to better serve its diverse student population. Implementing decolonial strategies is critical for creating an inclusive environment where all students feel represented and valued. The “Decolonising the Curriculum” toolkit produced will provide the framework to support staff in understanding what decolonising the curriculum (DtC) entails and how to engage with it in an accessible way.
Central to staff development, the toolkit emphasises culturally responsive pedagogy, offering practical strategies for integrating diverse cultural perspectives into teaching practices. This collaborative approach fosters a classroom environment where multiple viewpoints are valued and explored, enhancing the educational experience for all.
The toolkit also highlights the importance of decolonising assessment practices. It recommends co-creating assessment criteria with students to ensure fairness and reflection
