Abstract

In response to the growing need for creative, inclusive interventions to support individuals affected by memory loss, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, University of Sunderland lecturers Sarah Riach and Rachel Emms developed MemoryBods—a dance-based engagement project aimed at stimulating memory and emotional connection through performance.
Drawing on techniques used in earlier LearningBods projects, MemoryBods employed theatrical elements such as props, set design, dance, and music to prompt reminiscence and sensory engagement. Designed with input from healthcare professionals and caregivers, performances were delivered in community centres and care settings, targeting older adults living with cognitive decline. Each session included live performance followed by informal interactions and gentle participatory activities.
The performances were structured around music of past decades to evoke personal memories. Student performers received training on dementia-friendly practice and collaborated with care staff to ensure accessibility and appropriateness. Observational notes, informal interviews with staff and carers, and performer reflections were collected to evaluate impact.
Feedback indicated that participants responded positively to the visual and musical prompts, with many displaying signs of recognition, verbal recall, emotional expression, and increased engagement for example singing along.
MemoryBods illustrates the therapeutic potential of applied theatre to engage individuals affected by memory loss. The project demonstrates how multisensory, non-verbal, and narrative-based performance can create meaningful moments of connection and identity reinforcement for people living with dementia.
