Perceptions of an Artificial Intelligence Musical Collaborator

Allen, Becky and Mo, Ronald (2025) Perceptions of an Artificial Intelligence Musical Collaborator. Journal of the Audio Engineering Society. pp. 1-10.

Item Type: Article

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has the potential to change the landscape of music creativity through new creative practices and tools to assist in all aspects of music making. However, the acceleration of this
technology has also prompted concerns relating to a range of ethical issues. Discourse surrounding AI within music has included limited consultation with creative practitioners surrounding potential disruption to working practices.
This study centres the concept of ‘musicking’ to identify participants to gather data pertaining to views of Generative AI within music. Findings indicate that some musicians are already incorporating AI within their
practice as a creative assistant. However, a clear mental model of how AI works and how this can be ethically implemented within practice is lacking, potentially exacerbating concerns around AI adoption. Embedding a
human-centred AI approach to the development of AI music tools, through stakeholder engagement and alignment with existing music technology may harness the positive potential of AI without devaluing musicianship.
