Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to outline the development and delivery of a library induction toolkit and share the experience of the liaison team at the University of Sunderland. Library induction at Sunderland is viewed as the first opportunity to welcome students, make a lasting impression and provide enough information to entice them to come back to the library. In recognition of the different needs of students, each with different experiences and learning styles and in acknowledgement that the time allocated for induction is different across different departments, and using the theme ‘All the Shapes Your learning Takes’, a toolkit was developed comprised of elements that could be used for different situations and that would enable the librarians to tailor their induction to their students whilst giving a consistent message. Methods of obtaining feedback on the toolkit are discussed, and samples of feedback shared.
