Abstract

The aim of this keynote presentation was to introduce participants to visual research through a discussion of art museum practices of exhibiting and collecting photography as well as curatorial participatory strategies involving public-generated photography. The paper also discussed how different research endeavors (including but not limited to studies in art history) have made use of art photography collections.

Additional Information: The workshop “Visual Culture and Visual Research: Photographic Archives and Their Analysis in Social Research” was held by the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Education, State University of Surabaya. It host over 40 participants, including researchers, lecturers, and students from several Indonesian universities across the country. The workshop had two major aims: firstly, to introduce the participants to the nature, potential, and possibilities of photographic data, and secondly, to train them in the fundamentals of photography-based social research.
