Abstract

This paper seeks to provide an albeit schematic archaeology of the iconic and ideologically charged images of physical toil and drudgery that have constituted the commonplace of representations of working people and people at work in distinct historical moments of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The aim of this juxtaposition is to outline the visual repertoire, the diverse stories of objectification and subjectivisation that contemporary representations of labour may have drawn upon or departed from.
