Abstract
This unit prepares beginning teachers for the transition from assisting experienced teachers to taking sole responsibility for whole class teaching. Using the PROPS framework (Personal attributes, Routines, Outcomes, Planning, Subject knowledge), the unit addresses key areas that underpin confident classroom leadership. It explores how to develop your professional teacher persona through effective verbal and non-verbal communication and strategic positioning within the classroom. The unit emphasises the critical importance of establishing clear routines for classroom management, behaviour expectations, and learning objectives. Practical guidance covers building relationships with pupils and teaching assistants, managing challenging situations, and considering the LOOP acronym (Learning starting point, Objectives, Outcomes, Progress) when planning. Through reflective tasks and evidence-based strategies, beginning teachers are encouraged to develop essential skills in lesson planning, behaviour management, and creating positive learning environments.
