Abstract

Much of the work that we do in libraries is invisible. This is not to say that the work we do lacks value, but its invisibility makes it difficult to communicate that value to partners both within and external to the library. This makes two-way engagement difficult, if not impossible, and good relationship management relies upon clear communication and evidence of value and impact.
This workshop therefore focuses on ways that we can use different tools such as action plans, annual reports, and AirTable to communicate our goals and progress towards them. Workshop leaders will be sharing lessons learned from their two years of formal action planning, particularly improvements they have made and their own ambitions for future planning cycles.
Participants will have the chance to reflect on what point in a relationship management journey they are, and where they want to be. They will also come away with practical ideas of how they can formulate goals and report on progress towards them. Participants will then identify a particular challenge in their role, whether it be invisible work or an area to improve upon, and then to identify what evidence or data they could collect within a year to show progress.
Time and space will also be given to allow a critical lens on the ‘impact agenda’ and to examine the notion that if it can’t be evidenced, it isn’t worth doing.
With participants’ permission, workshop leaders will summarise the discussions and post the ‘state of play’ to the relationship management listserv.
