Abstract
What can we learn from the encyclopaedia anyone can edit?
This workshop at the Discovering Collections, Discovering Communities Conference 2022 demonstrated how Wikimedia, specifically Wikipedia and Commons, can simultaneously help staff and trustees gain a new digital skillset while also sharing collections and knowledge worldwide.
The emphasis of this workshop was on engaging and including new audiences through Wikipedia and its sister sites, as well as a hands-on editing exercise (no previous experience required).
Trainers took participants through traditional misconceptions around Wikimedia, alongside their underlying philosophy and culture. Participants considered whether their audiences and volunteers might also benefit from learning to edit Wikimedia projects.
