RETENTION DEEP DIVE: Creating the conditions for success

Newby, Kate (2025) RETENTION DEEP DIVE: Creating the conditions for success. In: Council of Deans of Health Summer Conference, 10-12 June, Newcastle Crowne Plaza. (Unpublished)

Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Keynote)

Abstract

This keynote presentation, delivered as part of the Council of Deans of Health Retention Deep Dive, explores an institutional case study of strategic, data-informed interventions aimed at improving student retention and success within a School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Drawing on the author’s cross-institutional leadership role, the presentation outlines how triangulated insights from predictive analytics, student voice feedback, and retention data were used to identify key barriers to progression and achievement.

The project focused on three core areas: social isolation and belonging, accessibility and disability inclusion, and academic clarity and consistency. Tailored interventions were co-developed with students and staff, including re-induction points, enhanced academic resources, and embedded wellbeing and support strategies. The Health Education England-funded project utilising the Predictive Analytics Dashboard (PAD) as a central tool in identifying at-risk students and evaluating impact.

Quantitative outcomes showed significant improvements in progression, attainment, and outcomes for all students and significant improvements for those with disabilities.

This presentation contributes to the growing evidence base on student success strategies in healthcare education and demonstrates the potential of combining student voice with institutional analytics to create inclusive, high-impact retention practices.
