Abstract

This chapter discusses how critical theory can enhance the quality of practitioner research and research partnerships by addressing power dynamics and promoting participatory, collaborative approaches. Rooted in the works of Marx, Freire, and others, critical theory emphasises the subjective nature of knowledge and the role of power in shaping social structures. By integrating critical theory, practitioner researchers can foster more authentic
relationships with communities, ensure ethical research practices, and produce socially transformative outcomes. This framework encourages reflexivity and the active inclusion of marginalised voices throughout the research
process.
