Item Type: Conference or Workshop Item (Paper)

Abstract

This paper explores the contribution of Grace Morley, first Director of the Museum of Art, San Francisco, to the accommodation of photography in the art museum in the 1930s, seeking to elucidate how her vision of photography as an egalitarian, inclusive art was discounted in a male-dominated art establishment.

More Information

Additional Information: The third Fast Forward conference discussed how the framing of photographic practice can be reimagined. Through a mix of call for papers and invited speakers, this public event aimed to bring together key voices from across the globe to explore and identify critical themes and issues pertinent to how women work as photographers in the 20th and 21st century and recognising their contributions to the medium’s history. The conference explored a wide range of working practices both historical and contemporary, addressing key themes in current photography research and celebrating important works. The key themes were: Sharing the Self and Others, In and Out of the Museum, Connected Practices, Global Stories and How do Women Work? This event was organised in partnership with University for the Creative Arts (UCA) and London College of Communication (LCC) at University of the Arts London Photography (UAL), with support from The Leverhulme Trust International Network Grant. https://fastforward.photography/our-projects/tate-2019/
